What is Powerline or Homeplug networking?

Powerline Networking is the name of the technology that allows you to use your existing electrical mains wiring in your home or office to create a computer network or LAN. As well as data, audio and video can be sent around using the higher speed modules.

Modules are generally used in pairs. One is plugged into a standard 13A socket in one location e.g. the bedroom and an ethernet network cable attached. The other is plugged in at a different location e.g. the lounge and again, an ethernet cable attached. The devices that are then connected to each ethernet cable are then effectively connected to each other as though they were joined by a long network cable.

The name Powerline Networking is just one of many names that have given to this form of connectivity. Others are Broadband Over PowerLine (BPL), Broadband PowerLine Networking, Ethernet over Powerline, PowerLine Communications (PLC) and HomePlug.
